Wills and power of attorney in the UK

Having a will or lasting power of attorney gives you peace of mind by enabling someone you trust to look after your affairs, health and welfare, and to distribute your assets when you pass.

What is a will?

A will is a legal document outlining how someone’s estate is to be shared after a death.

Making a will is of vital importance if you want to protect and distribute the assets and cash from your estate among your family or any other beneficiary.

Making a will ensures that any decisions that are made after death are made by you and, in some cases, it also outlines care arrangements and guardianship of children.

What is a lasting power of attorney?

A lasting power of attorney is a formal legal document enabling you to appoint someone to make financial and welfare decisions on your behalf if you are no longer to make choices yourself because of mental incapacity or dementia.

In the UK, there are two types of last power of attorney:

  • Personal welfare

This allows someone you appoint to make decisions regarding your healthcare and personal welfare

  • Property and financial affairs

This allows someone you appoint to manage your financial affairs and property

If you’re unsure which lasting power of attorney document you require, please get in touch with our experts by calling 0800 140 4644 and we’ll be happy to help.
