HMRC Checks and Enquiries

HMRC are carrying out an increasing number of investigations into taxpayers’ affairs to uncover evidence of the following activities:

  • attempting to reduce the amount of tax paid via misrepresentation, concealment, or omission
  • activity carried out in the hidden economy
  • undeclared sources of income
  • false generation of tax repayments
  • smuggling

There is a set procedure under law governing these investigations and how they are conducted. If you are contacted by HMRC enquiring into your own tax and financial affairs, it is strongly in your best interest to seek professional representation.

If you have recently been contacted by HMRC enquiring into the amount of tax you have paid and your level of income howsoever earned, please use the form below, call us free on 0800 140 4644, or email [email protected]

Understanding HMRC Tax Investigation

Have you received an HMRC investigation letter?

Being sent a letter by the taxman is part of the standard HMRC tax investigation procedure.

This does not mean that you will be subject to an HMRC criminal investigation – all it means is that they’re making an enquiry at this point.

Following their initial letter to you, they may:

  • request a visit (we would advise that a professional be present with you at the meeting to protect your interests)
  • launch a full investigation into your tax affairs
  • enter into prolonged correspondence with you during which they make formal requests for further information
  • request a meeting (an advisor can be present at these meetings)
  • issue with a demand for unpaid taxes (plus fees and penalties) if they find that you have not paid the correct amount of tax (demands can be appealed against)
The HMRC tax investigation time limit I have been set seems unreasonable

It’s likely that the amount of information and documentation HMRC will request from you will be substantial. If you feel that you will be unable to furnish them with everything they’ve asked for within the timescale they have set, you should let them know ask quickly as possible explaining why and proposing an alternative timescale.

You are also entitled to complain if you feel HMRC are taking too long in dealing with your responses to their questions.
